Sue Pope - Forensic DNA ExpertI am a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biochemistry and Microbiology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Biochemistry.

I have worked as a Forensic Scientist since 1987; until 2011 I was employed by the Forensic Science Service, most recently as Principal Scientist for DNA Interpretation.

I carried out research in DNA analysis and interpretation during the introduction of DNA analysis techniques.

I have also carried out operational casework and have produced written & oral evidence on complex scientific issues in non-technical language for Crown and Appeal Courts in the United Kingdom and abroad.

I have taken part in the validation and implementation of techniques for forensic casework and carried out quality investigations.

I have provided specialist training and development in interpretation for DNA and other evidence types and the statistical evaluation of DNA results for scientists within the FSS and other forensic organisations across Europe, for University graduates & postgraduates and for members of Criminal Justice system including senior police officers, lawyers & judges.

I have published many papers in scientific journals and presented papers at national and international scientific conferences.

From 2000 – 2011 I worked with the Interpretation Group at the FSS, in association with other senior DNA scientists and forensic statisticians, specialising in the interpretation and evaluation of DNA evidence.

In January 2012, on the closure of the FSS, I commenced work in private practice as an independent forensic consultant.

I am a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Forensic Science; PW Allen Merit Award, Forensic Science Society 2011; Member of the International Society for Forensic Genetics; Professional Associate of the UK College of Policing; member of Editorial Board of CS Eye

Other roles include Assessor for the Netherlands Register of Forensic Expert and Chair of Forensic Science Regulator DNA Interpretation Specialist Group

I was the Visiting Fellow at ESR in New Zealand for 2015-16, spending time there in January 2016.

I am registered as a DNA expert with NRGD
